Funeral services for Lawrence C. Direen, 89, were held from the Oelke Funeral Home at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday, Dec. 01 to St. Joseph's Catholic church at 10 o'clock. The Rev. B. H. Skahill officiated at the Requiem High Mass. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery.
Lawrence Charles Direen was born on a farm near Volga City in Sperry township Nov. 01, 1859, and died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Feeney in Elkader Sunday evening Nov. 28. He was a life long resident of Clayton County and the last surviving member of his family. He had reached the age of 89 years, 27 days.
Five sisters preceded him in death. They were Katie, Anna and Nellie Direen, Mrs. Belle Hanlon and Mrs. Margaret Ivory.
Survivors are a number of nieces and nephews of Elkader and New Mexico.
Pallbearers were: Fred Orr, Edward Finley, Jim Hurley, George Cassutt, Ray Barton, and Nick Finnegan.
Out of town people who attended the funeral were: D. J. Raftis, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hanlon, Tom Ryan, all of Oelwein; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyers, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Meyers, all of Volga; Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hurley, McGregor, Jim Hurley, Minneapolis, Minn.; W. F. Barnes, Will Jewett, C. C. Malone, Wm. Krieg and Mrs. Lester Stahl all of Strawberry Point.
