Irene Elizabeth Baker, second daughter of Henry and Abbie Baker, was born on a farm in Seward county, Nebraska, on Nov. 10, 1879.
While she was a child the family returned to Iowa, their former home, and settled on a farm near Quasqueton. Here she grew to womanhood, attended the rural schools and the Winthrop high school.
On Dec. 21, 1899, she was married to Will Hoskyn at the farm home of her parents near Quasqueton. The new home was established on a farm near Winthrop, in which community they lived for many years, and where their children were born.
In 1916, they purchased a farm south of Volga, to which they moved the following spring and which was their home until ill health caused them to retire, and they moved to their home in Volga in the fall of 1938.
She was converted early in life and became a member of the Methodist church, a regular attendant and faithful worker as long as health permitted. In the summer of 1938, her health failed and since then she has been very frail.
Four children were born to this union: James H., near Volga; Fred and Charles, Stuttgart, Ark.; and Mrs. Dorothy McDonald of Volga.
She leaves her husband, four children, 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ida Dunlap, Winthrop; one brother, R. W. Baker of Winthrop; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She died Thursday, July 15, at her home, at the age of 68 years, eight months and five days.
Services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist church, with the Rev. Leslie J. Faris, pastor, in charge, assisted by the Rev. D. V. Butler of Buck Creek and the Rev. E. J. Starr of Hawkeye, former Volga pastors.
Music was provided by Mrs. Fred Gernand, Mrs. Leslie Faris, Harry Boleyn and Albert Kunzman, with Leo Grether, piano accompanist.
Casket bearers were: Geo. Chappell, Oliver Follon, David Holsman, Kenneth Hoskyn, Ronald Moore and Jesse Holtzman.
Interment was in Hill Crest cemetery, Volga.
