Jerry Kirby, Strawberry Point, drowned in the Maquoketa river late Sunday afternoon when he fell into the water at the Quaker Mill power plant near Manchester.
Sheriff Carl Anderson, Patrolman George Ponsford and Ray Murphy of Manchester dragged the river, and the body was recovered in 45 minutes.
Kirby, 29, was fishing with is brother-in-law, Clair Way, and Otto W. Fear. He left his companions and walked across the Quaker Mill dam to the east side. As he attempted to climb from the dam to the pier he fell backward into 15 feet of water.
Kirby, who had served in the navy, was employed at the Strawberry Point municipal light plant. He is survived by his wife and three children.
