Clayton County Register, 07 Mar. 1946.

Three persons died early Monday morning when an explosion partially destroyed a farm home six miles west of Strawberry Point.

The dead were: Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Opperman, both 24, an their year-old son Burton.

Mrs. Opperman was dead when Strawberry Point and Arlington firemen, summoned at 6:45 a.m., arrived at the home. Her husband died about 10 a.m. at Mercy hospital in Oelwein

The explosion apparently occurred when Opperman tried to start a fire with kerosene. He was found lying near the stove with a large can with the bottom blown out close by. Mrs. Opperman, who was evidently trying to reach the baby, managed to get into the bedroom before collapsing. Both Opperman and his wife were badly burned but the child's death was attributed to suffocation.

A triple funeral was held at the Strawberry Point Lutheran church at 1:30 this afternoon. Opperman is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Opperman of Strawberry Point, two sisters, Mrs. Walter Faust, Manchester, and Beverly Opperman at home; and a brother Richard now in service in Japan. Mrs. Opperman, the former June Stamp, is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stamp, and three sisters, Esther, Harriet and Emma Nell Stamp of Lamont.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Opperman were married in 1944 at Manchester.

They rented their farm from Jack Matthews of Strawberry Point.

The family is buried in the Campton cemetery, Lamont, Buchanan Co., IA
