DIED - At Wankegan [sic], Ills., Feb. 7th, Reuben Y. Cory, in the 29th year of his age.
In our last issue we told our readers that this sad event was anticipated hourly by anxious friends here and in Waukegan, but we hoped the Destroyer would stay his hand. Not so, however. While we were penning the lines referring to him, the death-damp was on his noble, young brow, and a few hours later R.Y. Cory, our friend and the friend of all who knew him, had passed the portals of Mortality, and was forever lost to those pleasant earthly associations which his life adorned.
The deceased had been several years prominent as a merchant of McGregor, upright, honorable, socially agreeable, he won hosts of friends who will retain the recollection of his virtues til! the teacher DEATH shall summons them also to the mould which now presses the unconscious breast of Reuben.

Note: Reuben Y. Cory was a merchant in McGregor prior to removing to Illinois. The 1882 Biography from the 'History of Clayton County, Iowa' of William F. Huntting states: "In 1876 he married Charlotte M. Monson, a widow of Reuben Y. Cory."
