Elkader Register, Thur., 3 Apr. 1924.
Dr. W. A. Miller sank quietly into the sleep eternal at his home in Elkader last evening at 9:15, (Wednesday, April 2nd, 1924.) He had not been well for several years and on November 27th, 1921, a cerebral hemorrhage resulted in partial paralysis. He recovered largely from this attack, was able to be about, but a second attack came October 25, 1923. Again he rallied but on February 7th, a nervous collapse set in and he gradually grew weaker until death came to end the struggle.
William Aaron Miller was the son of Cyrus and Jane (McGuire) Miller and was born on the home farm in Mallory township August 2nd, 1870. There he grew to manhood absorbing from it the love of the farm and the garden which followed him throughout his life.
After gaining what education he could from the home school he attended Lenox College at Hopkinton, and later graduated from the state Teacher's College at Cedar Falls. Deciding to become a physician he entered the medical school of the State University of Iowa at Iowa City and graduated with the degree of M.D. He then took a post graduate course at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Milwaukee, Wis., specializing on diseases of the eye, ear, nose and throat, and graduated in 1897.
He came to Elkader in that year and built up a large practice. Realizing that his health was becoming undermined he sought assistance and in July 1919, Dr. P. R. V. Hommel came here and became associated with him as a partner. Last summer Dr. Miller sold his interest to Dr. E. C. Meggers.
Dr. Miller was married to Miss Carrie M. Diers of Read township on August 17th 1898. She with one daughter, Miss Greta Jane Miller, four brothers and two sisters are left to mourn his untimely death. The sisters are: Miss Priscilla Miller and Mrs. Florence Tidball of Brookings, S.D. The brothers are: Sumner Miller of Pine Bluff, Wyo.; Dr. Grover C. Miller of Guttenberg; Frank Miller of Dubuque, and Edward, who with his sister Priscilla live on the old home farm in Mallory township.
Stricken when he should have had many years of a useful life still before him, Dr. Miller has had the sympathy of the entire community in his fight to return to health and all will sorrow at his death. His ability, his sympathetic care and faithful service made him physician, friend and adviser to a wide circle of our people who miss him, and regret that his useful life had been cut so short. He was but fifty-three years and eight months old.
Dr. Miller was a devoted member of the Masonic order, belonging to Elkader Lodge, No. 72, A.F. & A.M., De Molay Consistory of Clinton and El Kahir Shrine of Cedar Rapids. He was a charter member of the Elkader Kiwanis Club, and a member of the county, state and national medical associations.
The funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Congregational church with the usual Masonic rites, Rev. W. J. Warner will officiate and interment will be in the East Side cemetery.
