Funeral services for Lorin William Hamann, 73, were held Monday, July 8, 1996, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elkader. Rev. Thomas W. Rhomberg officiated the service with burial in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Elkader. Pallbearers were Dean Hamann, Dennis Hamann, Daniel Hamann, Darren Hamann, John Hamann and Mark Hamann.
Lorin William, son of Harvey and Viola (Radloff) Hamann, was born September 23, 1922, in St. Olaf, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Monona High School in 1941. He attended Wartburg College and also the University of Iowa after his time in service. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II, was a Prisoner of War and received the Purple Heart. On January 19, 1946, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Burlingame in Elkader. Two sons were born to this union. Lorin was a rural mail carrier for the St. Olaf Post Office from 1959 to 1982. He always remained active in civic and community work. He was mayor for 12 years in St. Olaf, commissioner of the Great River Road for the State of Iowa, lifelong member of the St. Olaf Chapter of the American Legion, founded the Elkader area chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous in 1969 and was known locally as "Mr. AA", past president of St. Olaf Conservation Club and St. Olaf Telephone Co., member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and was board president when Keystone Terrace was developed. Lorin Hamann died of leukemia Thursday, July 4, 1996, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie of 50 years; sons, Stephen and his wife Naowarut of Bangkok, Thailand, and Richard and his wife Beverly of Iowa City; two grandchildren, Rachel and Brian of Iowa City; and two brothers, Harlan of Maynard and Gerald of Mesa, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Verda Mae Wagenknecht.
