Dr. Frank Joseph Kriebs, 91, practicing physician in the Elkport-Garber community for the past 70 years, died last night at Mercy hospital in Dubuque where he had been taken last Sunday.

The body is at the Witt funeral home in Elkader. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Dr. Kriebs, who one time remarked that he "wished to die in harness," made his last professional call to a patient at Garber last Saturday.

During his lifetime of service to this community the doctor one estimated he had delivered more than 300 babies. He never refused to answer a professional call, day or night.

At the time of his death, Dr. Kriebs was the state candidate for the national honor of "General Practitioner of 1951." This title is given to one doctor chosen each year by the medical profession in the United States.

His name and many testimonials written by friends and fellow practitioners concerning his work in this community were sent on to national headquarters by Dr. T.J. Greteman, Dubuque.

On May 27, 1948, in honor of his 63 years of service to the community and his 89th birthday, Dr. Kriebs was invested as a knight in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, one of the highest honors a Catholic layman may receive. The Most Rev. Henry P. Rohlman, archbishop of Dubuque, officiated at the special investiture ceremony at St. Michael's church, Garber. The ceremony preceded a mass offered by the Rt. Rev. Msgr J. Fred Kriebs, nephew of the doctor.

In the sermon the Rt. Rev. Msgr B.H. Skahill of Elkader said in part: "On this day we honor a physician and the church honors him. He has been what a Catholic physician should be, healer of bodies, soother of troubled souls, Christian gentleman, staunch and unswerving friend ..... fearless champion of the right and, when occasion called for it, equally fearless denouncer of the wrong."

"The church does not honor a man merely for length of service, but rather for quality of service."

The presentation of a citation from the Iowa State Medical society to Dr. Kriebs was a feature of the afternoon program and reception at this time.

Dr. Kriebs was born in Guttenberg on May 27, 1959 [sic]. He was graduated from Rush Medical college in Chicago and engaged in practice in his profession in Carroll until 1886 when he returned to Clayton county and established his residence and professional headquarters at Elkport.

He was a member of both the county and state Medical societies and the American Medical association.

Dr. Kriebs married Nettie E. Goodsell in 1894. They had one daughter, Sister Mary Columba, BVM, a member of the faculty of Mundelein college in Chicago. Mrs. Kriebs preceded her husband in death.
