Peter Schaefer, carpenter

Hi,
I'm looking for any information about my gg-grandfather, Peter Schaefer. He was born abt 1884 in Prussia (or Germany), arrived in NY 1867 and married in Brooklyn in 1870. Sometime between then and the 1880 census he is found living on Colfax St. in Murray with his family! The spelling on that census was "Shaffer", but in most other documents the spelling is "Schaefer". By 1889, his wife is back in Brooklyn as a widow. So I don't know if Peter died in Iowa and she moved back east, or the whole family moved back east where he died.

If anybody runs across a clue, please let me know. The one consistent piece of info I know is that he was a carpenter!
