Funeral services for Ralph Stephen Bennett, 81, retired plumbing and heating contractor, were held at the United Methodist church Feb. 5 with the Dr. Jerrold Swinton and the Rev. Rose Frank officiating. Burial was in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dick Hummel, Alvin Wright, Lyle Fitch, John Albaugh, Glenn Fear and Phillip Hargrave. Honorary bearers were Don Hargrave, Lyle Grove, Herbert Heald, Earl Howe, Richard Jedlicka, Joe Kirk and John Powell. Patty Niehaus was organist. Ron and Lois Salmonson and Harold and Neola Eiler were in charge of flowers.

Mr. Bennett died at Veterans hospital, Iowa City, Feb. 2.

The daughter of John W. and Lula Fuller Bennett, he was born at Otho Oct. 25, 1906. He graduated from Otho high school in 1923. He attended Tobin business college and the University of Iowa. He was married to Berniece G. Zimmer at Ida Grove June 1, 1935.

Mr. Bennett served in the navy in World War II, in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was discharged as a metalsmith first class Dec. 25, 1945.

The Bennetts came to Tipton in 1945, where he was in the plumbing and heating business for 32 years.

Mr. Bennett was active in the Boy Scouts, serving on local, county and district levels and received the prestigious Silver Beaver award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was a charter member of the Tipton Lions cub, serving as its president and was district Lions president in 1966-67. He was most active in the establishment of the Lions Eye Bank and served on the board of directors of the Iowa Lions Sight Saving foundation.

He was also active in the development of the Tipton Senior Park. He was a member of the First United Methodist church. During World War II he was active in religious shipboard activities.

He is survived by his wife, a son, Stephen W., Lake Wood, Colo.; a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Karen) Hux, Hunt, Texas and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
