August 18, 1904Aged Lady Passes Away
Grandma Herbert, one of the oldest persons In this city, passed away about two o'clock Monday morning. She had been i11 for more than a year, having suffered a paralytic stroke in April of last year, since which time she has been almost helpless. Her mind however was not affected and she was interested in what was going on around her. A short time ago her children celebrated her birthday which was a source of great pleasure to her. For the last two or three weeks her strength had been falling rapidly and
it was felt that her death might come at any time. Sunday she seemed as usual and only a few minutes before she died asked that she might be taken to the porch which was done. She passed away without a struggle. Mrs. Herbert was one of the pioneers of this county, coming here in1867. Her native state was Ohio where she grew to womanhood and married. Upon the arrival here of her husband, herself and family they settled on the farm In Brighton township, where J. K. Herbert, the youngest son, still lives. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert remained there until 1890 when they came to Atlantic. Mrs. Herbert has been a member of the Methodist church for many years. Four sons survive her, Frank of this city, Henry of Audubon, J. K. of Pymosa township and George of Kansas. The funeral was held at the home yesterday at 3:00, Rev. Hughes officiating.
