Zerley, Simeon (1827-1899)

Simeon Zerley, father of Mrs. Dr. Weidner of this city, was born in Fayette county, Penn., Feb. 3, 1827, and died in Monroe, Ia., July 25, 1899, aged 72 years, 5 months, 22 days. Mr. Zerley was the son of Samuel and Kiziah Zerley, whose home was in Smithfield, Penn. At the age of eighteen Mr. Zerley was converted to Christ and united with the Mt. Moriah Baptist church of Smithfield, Penn., June, 1845, and was baptised by Rev. William Penney. October 9, 1846 Simeon Zerley and Rebecca Burchinal were united in marriage and to this happy union were born seven children, four girls and three boys. Five children remain to mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate father: Mrs. Annie Weidner of Atlantic; Mrs. Alice K. Husted, and William L. Zerley of Monroe; Mrs. Emma Merrit, of Des Moines and Mrs. M. Delle Edman, of Monroe. On October 24, 1867, they moved from Wisconsin, arriving at Monroe, Ia, Nov. 6, 1867, residing in town until the spring of 1868, when they moved to their farm one mile and a half northwest of Monroe where they lived until the death of Mrs. Zerley. In 1892 Mrs. Zerley was stricken with paralysis from which she never entirely recovered, but was a constant sufferer for five years. On July 3, 1899, Mr. Zerley was stricken with paralysis from which he never aroused to again talk with loving friends. His work is finished. God called him home on the morning of July 25, 1899, at ten minutes of nine o'clock, he having spent fifty-four years in the service of the Master.
