Atlantic News Telegraph, Monday July 24, 1995 “Donald “Bus” Matthews 84, of Atlantic, passed away Sunday at the Cass County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held Wednesday July 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Roland Funeral Home with the Rev. Chuck Smith of Atlantic officiating. Interment will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. A visitation is set for Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The son of Martin E. and Etha Lou Misner Matthews, he was born October 31, 1910 in Atlantic and attended rural Atlantic school. He lived his early years in Atlantic, lived a few years in Leon in the 1920s and returned to Atlantic for the remainder of his life. His marriage to Lorraine Scherdin took place on July 18, 1935 in Rockport, Missouri. Donald was employed at the Saures and Dahlberg Meat Market for 8 years before he became a fire truck driver for 25 years for the fire department in Atlantic, retiring from there in 1976. He attended the Presbyterian Church; was a life member of the B.P.O. Elks lodge 445; a member of V. F. W. Post 3415; and a member of the Firemen’s Association. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by the parents; a sister, Mellie; a brother in infancy; and numerous aunts and uncles. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Matthews of Atlantic, a daughter, Shirley; a son Donald Matthews and wife, Patty of Beatrice, Nebraska; 3 grandchildren, Steve and wife Darla of Omaha; Jana Byers and husband Payton of Grinnell; and Todd and wife Amy of Waterloo; 8 great grandchildren, Lexie, Cody, and Kylie Byers; Eric, Sami and Troy Matthews, and Kasey and Koy Matthew; and aunt Leone Donahoe of Shreveport, Louisiana; nieces and nephews; a sister –in-law Marjorie Scherdin and a brother-in-law Gail Odem of Atlantic”
