I am hunting for (and trading info on) the family descendant from Christian DAILEY (1803-1876) and Emily NEIGHMAN (1813-1889) Here's a piece of the data
1 Christian DAILEY
----------------------------------------
Birth: 3 Dec 1803
Death: 2 May 1876
Father: James DAILEY
Mother: Margaret CACKLERChristian Dailey married Emily Neighman in 1830. He was of Irish descent and she was from Pennsylvania Dutch stock. They made their home on a farm in Huntington County IN very near to the present site of the village of Bippus. The country was mostly forests and swamps and the family suffered continually from malaria or ague. Two of the children, Lewis and Alonso, died of typhoid. In 1857 the family moved to Butler County Iowa and on what they termed "the prairie" were the children had over two miles to walk to school. One morning while on their way, the youngest child, Perry, was bitten by rattlesnake. The older girls improvised a tourniquet and carried him home where he recovered. One of the tragedies of Lydia's childhood was that, after proudly keeping up with her older brother, Anthony, in school until he commenced studying arithmetic from the book, he was given an arithmetic and she was told that, being a girl she had no use for such higher education. But in spite of handicaps, all three girls, Lydia, Eliza and Hannah security enough education to enable them to teach school though the two youngest girls did not live long afterward. The old home remained in the family for about 75 years. (Smith Genealogy of 1945)

----------------------------------------Ethel Dailey Barnard was my husband's great-grandmother. He remembers her a little. She was adopted by the Daileys. Her father was murdered and her mother died the next year. They were very poor. As for her mother Adelaide... I wish I knew where she got her education. She signed her husband's Civil War pension papers as his doctor. I've also seen her listed in a city directory as a veterinarian. I suppose back then it wasn't easy to get patients for a woman doctor. When I get back from my trip I'll see what other information I might have. (Karen Barnard, 11/02)
