Mrs. Grace Lillian Knapp, 78, of Route 2, died Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Parkview Nursing Home of arterial sclerosis.

She was born Feb. 2, 1889, in Allamakee County, near Waukon, the daughter of Fred and Mary Jones Shining.

In 1890, the family moved to a farm in Black Hawk County three miles west of Dunkerton. She attended the Iowa State Normal School, now the University of Northern Iowa, she taught in the rural schools in Bennington and Mr. Vernon Townships.

On June 9, 1915, she was married to Ira Knapp in Bennington Township. They moved to a farm on Route 2, where they had lived ever since.

She was a member of Mt. Hope Methodist Church, a supervisor of the cradle roll department and a teacher of the primary Sunday school classes. She was also an active member in the Farm Bureau as a leader of the 4-H girls.

Survivors include a brother, Herbert Shining, of Route 2; three sisters: Coral Shining, of 203 Reed St., Mrs. May D. Lottich, of 1011 Logan Ave., and Mrs. Florence Lammers, of Watertown, S.D.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two infant daughters and two sisters.

Services are pending at O'Keefe & Towne Funeral Home.
