WATERLOO - Norma Jean Kohls, 78, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2007, at Covenant Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born March 6, 1929, on a farm in Grant Township, Winnebago County, daughter of Alfred and Helen Schauf Hanna. She married Sheldon D. "Bud" Kohls on Feb. 16, 1953, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Clermont. He died July 18, 1997.
Mrs. Kohls received her education in Grant Township School No. 7 and graduated from Clear Lake High School, Clear Lake. She worked as a legal secretary for many years in Des Moines and Waterloo. She was a daycare provider and owner of several small businesses while raising her six children.
Survivors include three daughters: Mary Jo (Randy) Stokes of Oklahoma City, Okla., Carol Ann Tjaden of Waterloo and Lori (Maury) Bryant of Belle Plaine; three sons, William (Teri) and Sheldon "Joe" (Diane), both of Waterloo, and Patrick (Mary) of Farmington, N.M.; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Althea (Kenneth) Brager of Forest City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: Donald, Richard and Alfred Hanna Jr.; and two sisters, Arlene Steffen and Velma Munson.
Services 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, by Rev. Louis Jaeger. Graveside services and burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service. Visitation also for an hour before services Monday at the church.
