Mrs. R. L. Brown Dies;
Formerly Police Matron
Served 1930 to 1936 in
Mayor Morgan’s Administration

Mrs. Raymond L. Brown, 50, Rainbow drive, formerly for six years Waterloo police matron, died at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday in Presbyterian hospital, of embolism.

Suffering for some time from a heart ailment, she had entered the hospital Sunday.

Better known to the police as Mrs. Tillie Brown, she was appointed police matron by Mayor M. J. Morgan, April 15, 1930, and served throughout Morgan’s three terms as mayor. She was replaced in April 1936, by Mrs. Cecelia Storm following the election of Ralph B. Slippy as mayor.

Aided Morgan Campaign

Mrs. Brown had served as chairman of the women’s wing of Morgan’s 1930 campaign for mayor. She succeeded Mrs. Alice Warsaw as matron.

Born Matilda S. Harvey at La Porte City, Iowa, January 16, 1891, she was a daughter of George W. and Grace Harvey. She came to Waterloo 32 years ago, and was married on October 13, 1914, to Raymond Brown at Vinton, Iowa.

Active in Organizations

Mrs. Brown was active in many organizations, being a member of First Methodist church; Rebekah lodge; Lincoln circle, Ladies of the G. A. R.; Carpenters’ auxiliary 345; Women’s Labor auxiliary; Women’s Home Missionary society of the Methodist church; Women’s Christian temperance union, and Daughters of Union Veterans.

Surviving are the husband and two children, Grace Joan and James Leslie, at home, and her mother, Mrs. Grace Harvey, a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Shimer, and a brother, John Harvey, all of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Her father and two children are dead.

The body was taken to Kearns Garden chapel.
