Funeral services for Harold L. Asmus, 83, were conducted July 11, 2005 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, near Audubon with Pastor Bradley Ketcham and Rev. Merlene Ostebee officiating. Interment was in the Manning Cemetery in Manning. Honorary casket bearers were: Edward Ahrendsen, Amos Asmus, Elmer Bauer, Dale Deeth, Robert Hansen, Raymond Kruse, Walter Lage, Donald Maasen, Arnold Meyer, Fred Nelson, Herman Sonksen, Henry Sonksen, Gale Ullerich and Wayne Ullerich. Casket bearers were: Glen Ahrendsen, Larry Ahrendsen, Russell Bruhn, Carl French, Russell Mohr and Richard Zinke.

Harold Leslie Asmus, the son of Henry A. and Wilhemenia Dreager Asmus, was born Sept. 27, 1921, at home in Lincoln Township, Audubon County and died July 8, 2005, at the Friendship Home in Audubon.

He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Harold graduated from Gray High School in 1938.

On May 20, 1945, Harold was united in marriage with Darlene Meyer at Christ Lutheran Church in Churdan. Two daughters were born to this union. Harold lived all his life on the farm where he was born.

Harold held elected office at Trinity Lutheran Church since he was 18 years old. He served as Walther League President, Sunday School Superintendent, chairman of the congregation, finance board member, elder and treasurer. He was also active on other boards and committees, including Camp Okoboji, LCEF, LLL and Fellowship Club. Harold was the Lincoln Township clerk for over 40 years. He was active in the leadership of the Hereford Association an was secretary and director for the Farm Bureau. For 51 years, Harold exhibited vegetables and fruit at the Iowa State Fair, as well as being a loyal supporter of the Audubon County Fair. He was one of the founders of the Audubon Farmer’s Market.

He was inducted into the Hereford Hall of Fame in 2000.

Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers Earl and Arnold Asmus.

Harold is survived by his wife, Darlene Asmus of Audubon; daughters: Nancy and husband, Stan Baack of Audubon; and Mary and husband, Bruce Barkley of Blair, NE; granddaughters: Jennifer Baack of Lincoln, NE; Renee an T.J. Paulsen of Mountain View, CA; and Rachel Barkley of Blair, NE; sister, Viola Ostebee of Audubon; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
