Funeral services for Paul LeRoy Staines, 87, were conducted May 13, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Hartley, with Pastor Mike Willer officiating. Interment was in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Honorary casket bearers were: Doug Staines, Alan Jatho, Dan Shinkle, Don Shinkle, Chris Staines, Roger Shinkle, Joey Wanninger and Dale Dotson.

Paul LeRoy Staines, the son of Arthur and Dora Reinke Staines, was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Hartley and died May 9, 2005, at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake.

Paul attended school in Hartley.

On Oct. 13, 1940, Paul married Mildred Kruckenberg in Hartley. Following their marriage, they farmed and operated a digging business, digging sewer and waterlines for farmers in the Hartley, Everly and Sutherland area. They continued to live on a farm east of Hartley until 1989, when they moved to Arnolds Park. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hartley, where he was active with the MYF. He was the secretary of the Hartley Telephone and Electric Company in the 1940s.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and sister, Ruth Shinkle.

Paul is survived by his wife, Mildred of Spirit Lake; two sons and their wives: Jay and Nancy Staines of Palo Alto, CA; and Larry and Jeanine Staines of Arnolds Park (formerly of Audubon); five grandchildren: Chris Staines of Kansas City, MO; Erica Hough of Elmore, MN; Samie Staines of Palo Alto; Doug Staines of Waverly; and Michelle Wanninger of Des Moines; 10 great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
