Harvey Hight, Oldest War Veteran, Dies

Death Came to Pioneer Citizen This Morning After Long Period of Declining Strength.

Harvey Hight, civil war veteran and one of the earliest settlers of Audubon county, passed away at his home here at 8 o'clock this morning, death following a long illness. Mr. Hight was in his 94th year. He was the oldest member of Allison Post G.A.R. of this city, in which he had been very active as long as the state of his health would permit.

He was born June 22, 1832, in Ohio. Later he moved with his parents to the state of Illinois, where he spent his boyhood and received his education in the rural schools of his home community. In 1861, he enlisted in the 52nd Illinois volunteer infantry and served in the war nearly four years, returning following its close to the farm in Illinois. His marriage to Margaret J. Dickey took place in 1865.

Came to County in '79

In 1879, Mr. and Mrs. Hight came to Iowa, locating at Walnut. After a residence of six months there they came to Audubon county and bought an eighty acre tract in Douglas township for which they paid eight dollars an acre. Mr. Hight added stadily to this original tract until he had acquired more than 200 acres. He farmed in the Fiscus vicinity for a number of years prior to his retirement and removal to Audubon in 1909.

He is survived by two children, Mrs. Ed Haskins of this city and L.D. Hight of Menlo. Three sons, Charles, William and Elmer, are deceased.

Funeral arrangements have not been made.
