SAMUEL D. HARN DIED
EARLY THIS MORNING

Samuel D. Harn, civil war veteran
and one of Exira's oldest residents
and settlers, passed away this morn-
ing about three o'clock. Mr. Harn
has not been in the best of health
for some time, but felt no worse than
usual when he retired last evening.
Death was due to an attack of heart
trouble.

The deceased was past the 84th
milestone and had been a resident of
Exira for about 50 years. No funeral
arrangements have been made at this
time.

Audubon County Journal (IA)

(part of article missing) the late Samuel Davis
Harn, well known pioneer settler of
Exira and Civil war veteran, who died
last Thursday morning at 3 o'clock.

Mr. Harn was born in Fayette coun-
ty, Pennsylvania, December 5, 1840,
and passed away at his home in Exira
March 26, 1925, aged 84 years, 3
months and 21 days. The deceased
was the son of John H. and Frances
Lightly Harn and was one of a family
of nine children, seven boys and two
girls, one brother and two sisters
surviving.

At the age of twelve years he came
to Appanoose county, Iowa. He en-
listed in the Union army on July 7th,
1861, and was a member of Company
D, Sixth Regiment Iowa Infantry. He
was honorably discharged from serv-
ice in 1864. It was with great pride
that he used to recount his war ex-
periences and he had reason to feel
proud of his war record having fought
in many major conflicts.

Mr. Harn was united in marriage to
Mary Virginia McClelland, niece of
General McClelland, during the time
he was in the army and they have
lived together during their 61 years
of married life. It is indeed a hard-
ship for the good wife to lose one
with whom she has journeyed through
life's pathways for so many years.
Following his discharge from the
army Mr. and Mrs. Harn came to
Exira to live. Three children were
born to them, two of whom survive.
They are Samuel E. Harn of Spencer,
Nebraska, and Emma Woodruff of
Peoria, Illinois; the other daughter,
Mrs. F. M. Roberts passed away some
years ago.

The brother and two sisters who
survive are Albert M. Harn of Ver-
mont, Illinois; Mrs. Annabel Kirks-
bride and Mrs. Margaret Smith of
Des Moines.

The funeral sermon on "Immortal-
ity" was delivered by Rev. Dale Hum-
bert, pastor of the Christian church.
Over twenty-five years ago Mr. Harn
became a member of this congregation
and was an elder of the church at one
time. Rev. Robert N. Chord, pastor
of the Federated church, assisted in
the service.

Ballou Post of the American Le-
gion, the Spanish-American war vet-
erans, Civil War veterans and World
war veterans attended in a body and
the World war veterans acted as es-
cort to the funeral cortege.

The remains were laid to rest in
the Exira cemetery. A firing squad
sent forth a salute, taps were sounded
and in keeping with his request the
cannon, "General Logan," which he
fired every Fourth of July morning,
was shot at the cemetery.

His passing was a distinct loss. In
his death we lose another of those
heroes who made this Union strong
and safe. Exira now has but four
veterans of the Civil war remaining.

------------

thanks to our neighbors and friends

service.
