DEATH CLAIMS DAVID B. LYONS

The following account of the death
of David B. Lyons was taken from a
Los Angeles paper. Many people of
Exira will remember the deceased.

"David B. Lyons, 60, registrar of
voters of Los Angeles county, died
at 6 p. m. July, 30, at the California
hospital following a month's illness of
abscess of the liver.

Lyons leaves a widow, Mrs. Carolyn
Lyons, and one son, Willard E. Lyons,
of Chicago. The son arrived from Chi-
cago, summoned when his father's ill-
ness became critical.

"Coming to Los Angeles from Des
Moines in 1904, Lyons immediately
became identified with a number of
movements looking toward civic ad-
vancement.

"A two-year fight began in 1915 for
the office of registrar of voters, was
pushed vigorously and because of its
many spectacular maneuvers attract-
ed the attention of the entire county.

"Early in 1917 Lyons was declared
victorious over his opponent after a
number of court hearings, and his ap-
pointment was confirmed. Immedi-
ately afterward he was disqualified
for being absent from the State for
sixty days, but subsequent hearings
resulted in his reinstatement.

"He held the position continuously
until his death, and continued much
in the public view because of his
fearless stand upon a number of pub-
lic questions during the Word War,
when he served as a member of the
County Defense Council."
