GEORGE GUERNSEY
BURIED HERE FRIDAY
Remains Were Brought From Clinton
Where Death Occurred at Hos-
pital to This Place

Funeral services over the remains
of George Guernsey were held at the
Federated church here Friday, Rev.
Rbert N. Chord officiating. Interment
was made in Exira cemetery. The
remains were brought to Audubon
from Clinton on Wednesday.

The following obituary was taken
from the Clinton Herald of Wednesday
July 9th.

George Soule Guernsey, aged 41
years, son of the late George W.
Guernsey and Mrs. Guernsey the
latter now Mrs. E. A. Bates of
Audubon; all formerly of Lyons,
died at 11:15 o'clock Tuesday night
at Mercy hospital, as the result of
septic poisoning, developing from
a carbuncle on his neck, with which
he had been suffering severely
since June 11, when he entered the
surgical and nursing attention, to-
gether with a brave battle on his
own part, served only to prolong
his life until Tuesday night. His case,
today, was compared in medical
circles with that of Calvin Coolidge
Jr., son of President and Mrs.
Coolidge, who died Monday night,
after a week's struggle against the
same type of poisoning, resulting,
however, from a blister on a foot.

Funeral services for Mr. Guernsey
are to be held in Exira, his long time
home, and his body will be placed be-
side that of his father in the ceme-
tery there. A prayer service for the
deceased was held at the hospital
last night and the funeral party will
leave Clinton at 10 o'clock tonight for
Exira. In the party will be his mother
and two of his brothers, Austin T.
Guernsey and Phillip L. Guernsey,
both of Chicago, with their wives and
families, who have been at his bedside
since last week.

The deceased had been employed
for the last two years at the T. I.
McLane Printing Company office,
having followed the trade of his
father as a printer. He was born
in Erie, Ill., May 20, 1883, his
father, when in Lyons, known as
George W. Guernsey Connelly, the
latter the name of his step-father,
which name was also used by
George W. Guernsey when engaged
in publishing a newspaper in Mor-
risson, Ill. The deceased was named
Soule by and in honor of his mother's
step-father, the late Prof. Moses
Soule of Lyons, whose ancestors of
the same name came to America in
the Mayflower, a fact of which
George Soule Guernsey was always
very proud.

When the latter was about two
years of age, his parents moved from
Erie, where his father was engaged
in publishing the Erie Independent,
to Exira, Iowa, where the father took
charge of a weekly newspaper that
was then a struggling publication and
made it prior to his death, in 1898,
one of the best paying newspaper
plants in the state, considering its
size and the size of its field.

George Soule Guernsey remained
in Exira until after his father's death,
receiving his education there and
also working for the Bell Telephone
Company and in the Exira post office
in addition to following the printing
trade. Later he went west and settled
for a time at Harvard, Neb., where he
had charge of the Harvard Courier
while the owner was serving a term
in Congress. He was also at Scott's
Bluff in the oil boom days and at one
time was engaged in the motion
picture business in Harvard. Two
years ago he came to Clinton, the
early home of his parents and where
his father had been engaged in the
printing trade many years ago. He
was employed by the McLane Print-
ing Company and immediately became
recognized as one of the most skillful
printers in the business in Clinton.

Left to mourn his death are his
mother, his two brothers, Austin T.
and Phillip L. Guernsey of Chicao,
a brother Richard N. Guernsey of El
Paso, Texas, and a fourth brother,
Harry Guernsey of Los Angeles,
Calif., in addition to a host of friends.
