LONG TIME EXIRA
RESIDENT DEAD
J. H. WAHLERT, PIONEER, DIES
AFTER LINGERING ILLNESS

Jurgen Henry Wahlert, a resident
of this vicinity since 1868, passed
away at his home here at 2 o'clock
Friday morning, after a short illness
due to hardening of the arteries and
other complications.

Jurgen Henry Wahlert was born
in Suhult, Holstein, Germany, De-
cember 3, 1841, and died at his home
in Exira, Iowa, November 9, 1923,
aged eighty-one years, eleven months
and six days. In 1864 he was marri-
ed to Miss Lena Seninghusen at Sin-
hosen, Germany. Two years later
Mr. and Mrs. Wahlert came to Amer-
ica and their first home was at Mo-
line, Illinois. In 1868 they moved to
a farm in Greeley township near this
place and resided there until 1898,
when they moved to town.

Eleven children were born to this
union, twins dying in infancy in the
old country. The mother and nine
children survive. The children are
John, Ed, August and George of
Greeley township; Will of Anita;
Fred and Gustav of Hillrose, Colo.;
Mrs. Bertha Hackwell, southeast of
Exira; Miss Minnie Wahlert at home.
There are also thirty-two grandchil-
dren and five great grandchildren.
Fred Wahlert of Exira, Ed of Adair
and Mrs. Edwin Hoffman of Adair
are brothers and sister of the deceas-
ed.

Mr. Wahlert was a quiet, kindly
man and highly respected by a wide
circle of acquaintances.

Funeral services were held at the
home at two o'clock Sunday after-
noon conducted by Rev. Roe and in-
terment in Exira cemetery. Henry
Minerman, James Gripp, Vic Anci-
aux, Dwight West, Ben Jensen and
Charles Kommes acted as pall bear-
ers.
