According to earlier family research, William Cleghorn listed himself as "grandfather and guardian" for his grandson, Joseph H. Cleghorn, to enlist in the Union Army on Jan 6, 1863 for a period of 3 years in Centerville, Appanoose Co, IA. This was previously found in Joseph Cleghorn's Civil War Military Record. [The prior research was done before 1990.]. I think it's because of the last name that is often spelled incorrectly.
