Mrs. A. Thoman Norways Senior Citizen Died
Anna Thoman

Mrs. Anna Thoman, 99, Norway, died at the Martinson Nursing home in Marion Monday, Sept. 28, 1970, after being a resident of the home the past five years.

A requiem mass was said Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's Catholic church, Norway, with the Rev. Robert Saunders officiating. Interment was in St. Michael's cemetery. George Brosh was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Pallbearers were Clarence Schulte, William Schulte, Delmar Thoman, Vernon Thoman, Gerald Thoman and Sylvan Hasley, all grandsons of Mrs. Thoman.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph and Donald of Norway, and a daughter, Mrs. William A. (Anna A.) Schulte, Marengo, 13 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Thoman was born on Mar. 26, 1871, a daughter of Joseph and Lena Baker Meier. She was married in 1892 to Andrew Thoman who preceded her in death in 1951.

The Thomans were engaged in farming, residing on a farm southeast of Norway for many years, moving to Norway in 1928.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter Mrs. Lena Hasley and grandson, Robert Hasley.

Clarence A. Thoman

Clarence A. Thoman, 86, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, in Colonial Manor Care Center, Amana, following a long illness. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St Michael's Catholic Church, Norway, by the Rev. Keith Birch and the Rev. Dwayne Thoman. Burial: St. Patrick's and St. Paul's Catholic Cemetery, Watkins. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Michael's Parish Center, Norway, with a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Clarence was born June 25, 1920, in Independence, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Gessner Thoman. He married Lillian Etscheidt on Feb. 24, 1943, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Watkins.

Clarence is survived by his wife; a son, Dan (Ruth) of Walford; a daughter, Sharon (Allen) VanDerVeen of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren Shelley (Vaughn) Schultz of Walford and Darren Thoman of Denver; and a brother, Delmar (Virginia) Thoman of Fairfax.

Preceding him in death were his parents; an infant daughter, Shirley Kay; and brothers Vernon and Harold Thoman.

Clarence was a lifelong farmer, retiring in 1988. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, Iowa County Farm Bureau and St Patrick's Catholic Church, Watkins.

Delmar L. Thoman

FAIRFAX, Iowa - Delmar L. Thoman, 89, of Fairfax, died peacefully Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 15, at Blessed John XXIII, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman presiding and the Rev. Dustin Vu and priests of the Archdiocese of Dubuque concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery, Norway. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, at the church, where the rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. and a scripture service will be at 7 p.m. Teahen Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on May 13, 1922, near Rowley, son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Gessner) Thoman. The family later moved to the Norway area, where Delmar attended both a one-room schoolhouse and St. Michael's Grade School in Norway.

He married Virginia Michael on June 17, 1946, at St. Mary's Church, Spencer Grove.

Delmar spent his entire adult life farming in the Norway area.

He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and, especially in later years, woodworking. As a committed Catholic, he was faithful to his religious and family obligations.

Surviving are his wife of almost 65 years, Virginia; his five children, the Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman, of Dubuque, Edward (Joni) Thoman, of Norway, and their children, Melissa and Mark, Joanne (Bill) Becker, of Fairfax, and their children, Denise (AJ) Sieren, Kari (Kent) Fischer and Emily, Janice (Mark) Breja, of Chelsea, and their children, Laura, Christopher and Matthew, and Dianne ((John) Clarke, of Norway, and their children, Rachel and Erin; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parent, Joseph and Elizabeth Thoman; and brothers, Harold, Clarence and Vernon, and their spouses.

Joseph Thoman Dies in Cedar Rapids
Joseph A.V. Thoman

Norway: Joseph A.V. Thoman, 82, died Wednesday morning Dec. 3, 1975 in a Cedar Rapids hospital. He was born Sept. 3, 1975, southeast of Norway, the son of Andrew V. and Anna Meier Thoman. He married Elizabeth Gessner Sept. 21, 1915.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dec. 8, 1966, and one sister, Mrs. Lena Hasley.

Surviving are fours sons: Harold and Vernon, Cedar Rapids; Clarence and Delmar, Norway; 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Anna Schulte, Marengo; one brother, Donald, of Norway; several nieces and nephews.

Services were Saturday, Dec. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's church in Watkins, with the Rev. Robert Saunders officiating, assisted by Mrs. Thoman's grandson, Dwayne Thoman, Rome, Italy.

Burial was in St. Michael's cemetery, Norway.

Lillian Madeline Thoman

NORWAY. Lillian Madeline Thoman, 90, of Norway, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway by the Rev. Dwayne Thoman. Burial will be in St. Patrick's and St. Paul's Cemetery, Watkins. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church, where there will be a vigil service at 6:30 p.m.

She is survived by a son, Dan (Ruth) Thoman of Walford; daughter, Sharon (Allen) VanDerVeen of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Laverne (Albert) Bouchaute of Wheatland; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Gertrude Becker Etscheidt; her husband, Clarence in 2006; and a brother, Lester Etscheidt.

Virginia Clara Thoman

Virginia C. (Michael) Thoman, 85, of Fairfax died peacefully at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday, January 4, 2012.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m., on Monday at Blessed John XXIII, Cedar Rapids with the Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman presiding, and the Rev. Dustin Vu and priests of the Archdiocese of Dubuque concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Norway. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, January 8, at Blessed John XXIII where there will be a rosary at 3:00 pm and Scripture Service at 7:00 pm. Teahen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia was born on April 30, 1926 near Urbana, Iowa, daughter of Peter and Elizabeth (Reuter) Michael. She attended the neighboring one room school house and was a member of St. Mary Parish, Spencer's Grove. She married Delmar Thoman on June 17, 1946 at St. Mary Church, Spencer's Grove, Iowa.

Virginia and Delmar farmed in the Norway, Iowa area. Virginia was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and generously caring for her family. Virginia enjoyed family reunions, the A Ave. reunion, visiting with friends and playing cards. She served her parish by helping with parish dinners and by teaching religious education classes.

Surviving are her five children, Rev. Dwayne J. Thoman, of Dubuque; Edward (Joni) Thoman of Norway and their children Melissa and Mark; Joanne (Bill) Becker of Fairfax and their children Denise (AJ) Sieren, Kari (Kent) Fischer and Emily; Janice (Mark) Breja of Chelsea and their children Laura, Christopher and Matthew; Dianne (John) Clarke of Norway and their children Rachel and Erin; ten great grandchildren; one sister Theresa Oberreuter and six brothers Raymond, Bernard, Harold, Gerald, Anthony and Edward Michael.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmar, parents, Peter and Elizabeth Michael, and a brother Joe.
