J. C. SMALLEY Former Vinton Man is Called to His Reward
J. Curtis Smalley

After many years of intense suffering, death came to the relief of J. Curtis SMALLEY, of Fairbanks, Iowa, Friday, March 13. He has been a helpless invalid for a long time, but notwithstanding he was a patient sufferer.

For many years he was a resident of Vinton; in fact all his earlier life was spent here. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. SMALLEY of this city. In his youth he learned the harness-makers trade and worked for a long time under Haight and Colwell. After he left here he worked for awhile at the government shops in Rock Island. Afterward he operated a shop at Urbana and then went to Fairbanks where he has lived for a number of years.

Something over 25 years ago he was married to Miss Mary REED, daughter of the late Tom REED, of this city. Three children were born to them who with their mother mourn his death. The funeral and burial took place at their home in Fairbanks last Sunday. His parents were unable to attend.

Too many good words can not be spoken of the deceased. He had a heart as large as the proverbial ox. He was a member of Fidelity lodge K. of P. of this city and held his membership at the time of his death. When he lived here he was one of the most active of its membership, and he was a true Phythian. He never failed to respond to the call of duty. No matter at what hour he might be needed all that was necessary to do was to call him. Many and many a time has he worked all day and sat all night at the bedside of a sick brother. His brother Knights missed him when he moved away, and they mourn because of his death. A good man has been relieved from his earthly work and his reward should be great.
