Hans Pirie

Hans L. Pirie was born in Banff, Scotland, Feb. 18, 1865. He came to this country with his parents at the age of 7 years and located at Norway, Ia. He had spent practically his entire life in this community, with the exception of several years in Watkins. He had been engaged in the blacksmith and implement business for the last 45 years.

He was united in marriage to Margaret Mitchell May 24, 1886, and who preceded him in death April 19, 1927. One son, Glen was born to this union, who survives him, also a grandson, Ewald.

He had been in failing health for the past two years and passed away at the home of his son, Glen, on Thursday, Jan. 5, 1939.

The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church at Norway at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday by the Rev. R.D. Scott. Burial was made in the Mound cemetery at Watkins, Ia.

The pallbearers were: Charles Buchanan, Ralph Buchanan, Joe A.V. Thoman, John A. Schmidt, Walter Montague and Otis Tuttle.

Those from a distance attending were Mr. and Mrs. Bert Moore and Mrs. Ray Cafferty of Rinard, Ia.; Fran Reed and Lowell Reed of Lohrville, Ia.; Mrs. Luella Coleman of Paton, Ia.; Dr. and Mrs. W. J. Pirie of Springville, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Heatman of Plover, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray McKim of Grand Island, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Glen Moore of Bennett, Ia. Mrs. Julia Werning, Lowell and Robert Werning, Ethel Pirie, Arch and George Pirie, Mrs. F. M. Cass, Mrs. Julia Riley, Eva Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Z. B. Turner, Edith Meyer, Mr. and Mrs. Any Buchanan, and Fred Buchanan, all of Cedar Rapids.

{Submitter comment: Hans Pirie was son of William Pirie who came to Norway, IA, in 1869. Hans operated a blacksmith shop for many years. Hans is my first cousin 3-times removed.}
