Joseph Nolan
Joseph Nolan, the farmer living near Watkins, who froze his feet while insane and running barefooted in snow Christmas eve and Christmas night, died in the Mercy hospital in Cedar Rapids Sunday.
Nolan broke away from his guards Christmas eve, and ran about the country barefooted in the midst of a heavy snow storm for an hour or more before he could be captured.
Again on Christmas night when a bitter cold wind swept down from the northwest across the prairie, he again broke away and led his guards a long chase before he could be captured.
As a result of these exposures his feet were badly frozen and he was taken to Cedar Rapids for treatment. At first it was feared both feet would have to be amputated, and later it was reported he would only lose his toes. It seems, however, that the shock to the system was so great that he could not survive, and a couple of days before his death the physicians at the hospital had given him up.
The funeral was held from the Catholic church at Watkins and the burial was made in the cemetery near Van Horne. — Benton County Signal.
