Death calls an Old Vetran
J McKeen of Shellsburg, civil War Veteran Passed Away Last Sunday
John McKeen

Between 25 and 30 veterans of Vinton went to Shellsburg Wednesday to pay the last, sad rites to Comrade McKeen, familiarly known all over the county as "Jack" McKeen, who died at his home in that town the Sunday previous. He was a true soldier of the civil war, having served in an illionis regiment throughout the war. Since the war he was an active member of the G.A.R. and had always a helping hand for the "old veteran."

In the early 70's he came to Shellsburg and at first engaged in the livery business. He was always alive to the sever interest that interest a community and always took an active part in the affairs of his political party-democratic. He was always a regular attendant at the soldiers' reunions of the county. He possessed a generous nature and was a man who formed strong friendships.

He was past 70 years of age at the time of his death, He leaves a wife, daughter and son to mourn his death, and besides he leaves a friend in whomever he was acquainted. His life was simple but it was a pleasure to his friends.
