Rev. Marion Hazen

Hazen –Near Shellsburg, Iowa, Nov. 15th, Rev. Marion Hazen, aged 32 years.

The deceased came to Iowa about a year and a half ago, from Indiana, where he was born and “born again.” He was baptized into the fellowship of the Baptist Church at Pike Creek, ordained by the Lawrenceville Church before he was twenty years of age, served successively and successfully the Lawrenceburg [sic], Pipe Creek, Johnson Fork, Williams Creek and Posey Churches, and then back to the Pipe Creek Church, which Church he left to come to Iowa. Here he was pastor for a year at Shellsburg. For a time also served the Church at Palo, and at his death was pastor at Parker’s Grove. – As a minister he was earnest and laborious, possessing much of the spirit of his Master. His labors have been blessed to the conversion of many souls, and the building up of all the churches he has served.

As a Christian, he was conscientious, prayerful, and spiritually minded, and drew Christian hearts to him by the warmth of his Christian love. As a man and citizen, he was respected by all. He leaves a wife and seven small children. His life was noble and Christ-like: his death peaceful and happy. Sweet be his slumbers. His funeral services were conducted by the writer, in a very comforting consideration of Rev. xiv, 12. J.S.

Vinton, Iowa, Nov. 21st, 1868.

{Submitter comment: Date of death in Rev. Hazen's obituary, Nov. 15th, is contradicted by the date inscribed on his headstone, Nov. 18, which conforms to the age given at time of death.}
