Esther M. Franklin, 92 of Vinton, died Wednesday Dec. 20, 2006, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a brief illness. Family will greet friends, at .. Russell Funeral Home 1212 First Ave., Vinton... Private family inturment will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg. Ester's wishes were to be cremated.

Ester was born Oct. 9, 1914, in Wells, Minn., the daughter of Burton and Edith Gifford Baum. She was a lifelong resident of the Vinton area and graduated from Vinton High School in 1932. She married John N. Franklin on Aug 24, 1932, in Dixon, Ill. He preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 1973. She worked as a homemaker.

Ester is survived by three sons, Wayne of Grand Island Neb., John "Jack" (Eleanor) of Sidney, Mont., and Vaughn of Vinton; one daughter, Carol (Robert) Lutz of Vinton; six grandchildren, Randy (Deb) Franklin and Tami Franklin, both of Grand Island, Neb, Ronald (Deb) Lutz of Vinton, Lisa Lutz of Brandon, Greg (Heather) Franklin of Othello, Wash., and Brad (Nicole) Franklin of Sidney, Mont; six great-grandchildren, Dani, Ashley, Beau, Alexis, Brooke and Jaxson Franklin; and one step-great-grandson, Tanner Speidel.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; two brothers; one daughter-in-law; and one grandson...

John Franklin dies following surgery
John N. Franklin

Times-John N. Franklin, 45 of rural Vinton died Friday evening at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following surgery. He was born Sept. 24, 1907 at Shellsburg, a son of N. G. and Emma Miller Franklin, and married Ester Baum of Oregon, Ill on Aug. 24, 1932.

Surviving are his wife, three sons, Wayne of Grand Island, Neb. John of Austin, Minn. and Vaughn of Independence; one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Lutz of Brandon; seven grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Irene Buntin of Walker. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Campbell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harold E. Wagner officiating, and burial in Oakwood Cemetery at Shellsburg...
