MRS. MARTHA J. COMBS CALLED HOME
Martha Jane Combs

A pall of gloom was cast over the neighbors and friends of Mrs. Martha Combs when early on Wednesday morning it was learned she had passed to the great beyond. It had been known for a number of days that death was near at hand and the end came as a blessed relief after weeks of suffering.

Martha Jane Walter, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Noah Walter was born at Costa, Marshall County, Iowa, on November 24, 1857. The family moved to Shueyville, Johnson county soon after and it was there that she grew to womanhood.

February 14, 1878 she was married to Mr. Thomas Combs, remaining at Shueyville for a number of years. About 35 years ago they came to Benton County, moving to a farm near Blairstown where Mr. Combs engaged in farming. Eleven years later they moved to Blairstown where they have since resided.

Mrs. Combs was one of a family of thirteen children out of which two brothers still remain. She was the devoted mother of thirteen children, eight of whom with thirteen grandchildren survive her.

Five children died in infancy and childhood while the father and husband preceded her in death two years ago.

The children who survive her are: Mr. Vinton A. Combs, of Minneapolis; Mrs. John Schlue, of Blairstown; Mrs. Lawrence F. Heinrich, of Armstrong, Iowa; Mrs. Ray Bardow, of Dolliver, Iowa, Mrs. M. B. Speece, of Sheldon, Iowa; Mrs. B. R. Smallwood of Walker, Iowa, Miss La Verne Combs and Mr. Thomas Combs, of Blairstown, all of whom were present at the funeral.

After a lingering illness death came to her relief and she passed away peacefully July 13, 1921, aged 63 years, 7 months and 19 days. In early life she was converted and united with the Evangelical Churcn. She maintained a constant faith and loyal allegiance to her Savior to the end.

The funeral service was held on Friday afternoon, in the Methodist Church. The service was in charge of Rev. O. M. Yaggy, pastor of the Evangelical church assisted by Rev. Kenneth Danskin of the Methodist Church. Rev. Danskin sang a beautiful solo with Miss Lydia Groff at the piano.

The pall bearers were a group of old friends. They were Chas. Rieke, Aug Thorman, Chas. and Henry Sick Jr., Wm. J. Hoebel, and John Shinn.

The body was laid to rest beside her husband in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Those from a distance who were present at the funeral were: V. A. Combs, Minneapolis, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Heinrich, Armstrong, la., Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Speece and sons Howard, Richard and Robert, of Sheldon; Mrs. R. C. Bardo, Dolliver; and Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Smallwood and sons, Victor and Thomas of Walke.
