A contract for the construction of a new sewage treatment plant was awarded to Hennesy Bros, of Cedar Rapids on their low bid of $42,150. The American Legion Post chose Marvin Mundt as their candidate to attend Boy's State this year. Francis Giblin was selected to chair Ossian's centennial celebration. A queen for this event was elected by ballot. Connie Mae Ward, daughter of Rex and Mae Ward, received the most votes. Her attendants—the next six highest vote-getters were; Jackie Uhlenhake, Barbara Amdahl, Diann Schroeder and Ann Schildmeyer. Ossian residents entered the centennial preliminaries with great enthusiasm. Most of the community's males grew beards. One hundred twenty dancers (15 squares) rehearsed square dancing at the opera house. A kangaroo court to deal with non-cooperators was held one Saturday night with Judge Amanda Schultz presiding. Mrs. John (Dolly) Broghammer was convicted of wearing modern clothing. She was sentenced by the court to hang...(the implied severity of the punishment proved too much for poor Dolly—she fainted dead away.) But upon revival, she learned the judge's verdict was; "To hang her head in shame." Five bands appeared at the celebration. They included the famed Negro band of Waterloo, the Decorah Drum and Bugle Corps, the Swiss Band from Elgin and high school bands from Postville and Monona. Main street was blocked off from the West street intersection to the Standard Station. Parades were held on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with seventy floats and other vehicles competing for prizes. The queen and her court were featured along with local dignitaries. Jay Gould's circus played to good crowds on Ossian's streets. The centennial celebration was a huge success--despite cold, rainy weather. Crowds, over the three day event", were estimated to total 20,000 people, with half of these in attendance on Sunday. The Linderbaum Auto Company advertised the Henry J. model of the Kaiser-Frazer line as giving economical gas mileage--ranging from 30 to 35 mpg. This new auto retailed for $1299. The Ossian high school baseball team was the sectional champion this fall. The boys were defeated in the first round of district play, despite a three hit pitching performance by Tony Larson. Richard Daniels, supervisor of the local ground observer corps, has appointed Mrs. M. E. Vyverberg, Leonard Wagner and Mrs. Amanda Schultz as chief observers. Fifteen community residents have agreed to stand watches for aircraft as part of the Civil Defense Air Warning System.
