Warren Holtey was the winner, in county-wide competition, of an essay contest sponsored by the Iowa Development Commission.

Joan Bucheit, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alf Bucheit, was selected as the Ossian dairy queen in a contest sponsored by the Silver Springs Creamery. Joan will compete for the title of Winneshiek Dairy Queen at the county fair.

A junior legion baseball team, coached by Bradley Brockman, defeated the Elgin legion nine by a score of 13 to 1. The roster of this newly organized team includes: Norbert Wolfe and Dean Gilbert, pitchers; Urban Moser, catcher; Gerald Timp, 1st b; Don Martens, 2nd b; Miles Oyloe, ss; Marvin Mundt, 3rd b; Mark Uhlenhake, If; Conley Schweinifus, cf; and Tony Larson, rf.

There were several new names on the staff of the public school teachers. The faculty included: G. D. Olive, superintendent; Richard Daniels; Mrs. Mildred Sexton; Eileen Mantz; Helen Sand; Mrs. Emma B'othe 1; Elizabeth Hillesland; and Loretto McGary. The enrollment now stands at 140 pupils.

De Sales parochial school reports a registration of 265 students this fall.

A centennial festival was held at the Aanas farm south of Ossian. Pioneer Leif Aanas acquired this land from the government in 1849. The farm still remains in the family after 100 years.

A new stockyard is being built west of town by livestock buyer Walter Witt. Mr. Bill Bohr is in charge of the construction.

The Silver Springs Creamery Co. purchased the Moe houses and lots on Brockman Ave. The management announced that a new plant will be built on this site. This news was received with little enthusiasm by the neighbors of this property. A delegation met with the town fathers to protest the building of a factory in the residential area. The council advised the company that it would either be required to furnish their own sewage disposal plant, or pay the cost of expanding the town's present facility. The project was eventually scrapped and the property resold.

Turkey days were held on six Saturdays beginning with November 19th. The merchants distributed tickets to their customers. The barrel was rolled on Saturday afternoons and lucky ticket holders awarded fifty birds during the holiday season.

The Ossian public school's declamatory competition this year found these students as winners of their respective divisions: Lein Knudsvig, oratorical; Arthur Tangen, dramatic; and Norman Russell, humorous. In a contest with the champions of Decorah and Waukon, Lein and Norman were division one rated for their performance. Norman went on to win the sub-district and advance to the district and state finals. He was awarded a superior rating in both of these contests.

T. F. Schmitz retired from his position of postmaster. Wilbur Peyer was appointed acting postmaster.

Double-header basketball games were played at the opera house for the benefit of the March of Dimes. The first game pitted the QUEENS (married women) against the CHICKS (single gals). The other competition was between the married and single men. A total of $220.25 was realized for the charity.
