WWII

The first peacetime draft in American history, the Selective Service Training and Service Act, was passed by Congress on Sept. 16, 1940). More than sixteen million young men were registered for possible military conscription. In 1941, this act was amended to increase the term of service to thirty months. The period of responsibility was later defined as: "Duration of the war plus six months".

In Ossian, 179 young men signed at city hall in compliance with the law. Leo Scheidel was the registrar in charge. Walter Witt was the first man to register.

Cyril Geskin had the dubious honor of being the first local young man to be drafted into the army. Cyril entered as a private; when discharged at the conclusion of hostilities, he had advanced to the rank of major.

Unfortunately, a complete list of servicemen from the Ossian community has not survived over the years. We have made an effort, through newspaper items, Parish honor rolls, cemetery records and American Legion files, to compile an accurate muster roll. We apologize for any unintentional omissions or errors.
