1921

The pupils of O. H. S. held a declamatory contest at the opera house with these results: Torstein Kvamme, 1st in oratorical; Liv Kvamme, 1st in dramatic; and Albert Thornton, 1st in humorous. These students placed 1st, 2nd, and 1st, respectively in the county competition, retaining the championship cup in Ossian.

The graduates from Ossian Public High were Harry Collins, Liv Kvamme and Margaret Wolfe. The students finishing at De Sales were: Fred Brockamp, Fred Klein, Leo Lansing, Gershom Wells, Margaret Beer, Rose Klisart and Esther Spillman.

Cole and Cole advertised a new taxi service in town along with their blacksmith and auto repair shop.

The following speed limits were established for Iowa highways: maximum of 30 MPH for motor vehicles under 3 ton; 25 MPH for vehicles of 3 to 6 tons; and 10 MPH for any vehicle equipped with two or more metal tires.

Mayor Allen served fair warning that any motorist, driving the city's streets with their mufflers cut-out, will be fined from $5 to $25; and with three offenses, they will lose their driving privilege.

One hundred and twenty five Ossian residents attended a meeting to discuss the installation of a sanitary sewer system. A straw poll was taken with participants voting the issue down—43 to 34. The meeting was described as a "rouser", from start to finish.

The Ossian bakery advertised these bargains: bread—15¢ for a 24 oz. loaf; oranges--22¢ a doz.; lemons--30¢ a doz.; bananas—2 lbs. for 25¢; and pineapple— 25¢ each.

A corn yield contest, sponsored by the Farm Bureau, was held in 1921. The highest yield, listed as 65 bushels per acre, was found in a check plot on the H. O. Akre farm.

The boys of Father Flanagan's Boys Town entertained before a capacity audience at the opera house. There was no charge for admission, but donations were accepted

The Old Military Trail Association was formed during a meeting of interested parties held at the Calmar Hotel. T. F. Schmitz was named as secretary of the new organization, and M. J. Klein as vice president from Ossian. The Association marked the trail with yellow metal cylinders carrying the letters, O. M. T.

If my memory is accurate, the trail fed previously been identified by red, white and blue horizontal stripes around the telephone poles bordering its route.

The Rev. Robert Bates, pastor of the Community Church, has more than an ordinary devotion to his pastorial duties. He walked to Castalia to hold morning services; returned to Ossian for afternoon worship; and walked to Calmar to deliver a sermon in the evening—a total of 17 miles.

THE WOMEN'S AUXILIARY OF LEGION POST 503

A charter was granted to form a women's auxiliary of Brockman-Hammersland Post no. 503 in April of 1921. A Meeting was held on the 26th with Mrs. L. A. Klisart
