It became an ice skating rink during the winter months, and was utilized in that capacity for many years. My cousin, Bob Allen, and I stocked it with small creek chubs and suckers caught on our fishing expeditions. Many years later, we drained the pool, and were amazed at the size these fish had attained—some 4 to 5 pounds. By June of 1923. a nine hole golf course was added to the park. A group of prominent citizens agreed to pay a green's fee of $2 each for the privilege of using the facility for the season. The original members of the golf club were: Ward Allen, R. B. Jones, Greg Figge, F. E. Jones, Hugo Schneberger, Dr. J. P. Schneberger, Cornell Riveland, E. H. Anderson, and the Misses Regina and Victoria Meyer and Anna and Beatrice Becker. The golf course had mowed greens, but the fairways were one continuous rough. Lost balls were a major problem. Since the course was shared by my father's cattle, it was sprinkled with their deposits and required careful play. It proved popular for only a few years. The Ossian businessmen arranged for a free Chautauqua to run for five days under a huge tent. The schedule called for: 1st day—the Lombard entertainers, grand and light opera; 2nd day—Jerome Mora, spiritualism; 3rd day—Harrington Bennett Play Co., a comedy; 4th day—John Aubrey, a lecture on municipal problems; and the 5th day—the Lyric Quartette, a musical group. Otto Holder purchased the harness and saddlery business of John Wolfe. Mr. Wolfe's career as a harnessmaker spanned 52 years—32 of them in Ossian. Ossian's ladies, taking advantage of their newly-won franchise, cast 260 votes in the 1920 election. Military township went Republican for the first time in its history. Editor Schmitz, tongue in cheek, observed: "Only one Democrat was elected to office. The Bee man was selected as Justice of the Peace. He received one write-in vote—and didn't cast it for himself". Anderson & Klein advertised a clearance sale with these bargains: men's suits --$16 to $52; oxfords—$8.49; button and lace shoes—$3.98; blue denim bib overalls —$1.75; hats—49 ¢to $4.50; coffee—29¢; brooms—75¢; corn--12 1/2 ¢; peas—10¢; beans —15¢; karo syrup—40¢ for 5 lb. pail; peaches—85¢ a gallon; and 5 bars of soap— 25¢- (This was during the period of inflation following WWI.)
