thorough survey of electro-therapeutics... Chronic ailments of almost every nature yield, to treatment by the improvement of electro-therapeutics..."

The doctor has a lengthy article in a later edition in which he states: "I energetically and publicly refute the malicious attacks upon my professional reputation..." The nature of these attacks is not enumerated, leaving us to speculate that, perhaps, some ailments failed to yield to treatment by the adjusted x-ray machine.

This year's tax list finds W. P. Mullaney to be the largest individual taxpayer. His assessment of $207.77 was exceeded only by the Milwaukee Road's payment of $331.86. In Military twp., this road's bill totaled $997.33; the B. Cr. & N. paid $292; and Mrs. Knud Larson, $199.58.

Assessor Dalaker reported the following statistics for Military: poll taxpayers --136; dogs; male--112, female—3; taxable acres—21,982.91, valued at $842,735; horses--604; cows--1873, bulls and steers—277; swine—2193; and sheep--432.

A new bell was installed in the Catholic Church steeple. The old bell had been in use for 35 years, but is now damaged and emitted a dull tone.

The services for A. T. Gunderson were conducted on August 18, by the Reverends Askevold and Larson. This was the first funeral held in the new Lutheran Church.

The Misses Anna and Loretto McGary, along with their friend, Maybelle Wimber, had a frightening experience enroute to Calmar. A holdup man seized the horses by their bridles in an attempt to stop their buggy. Loretto applied her whip to the horses, causing them to break free from the bandit. The ladies engaged Ed Wirsching as an escort for their return trip.

A group of rowdies, from "prohibition" West Union, loaded up with Ossian booze, and created a disturbance that culminated in one, a Mr. Green, drawing his pistol and shattering the display window of the Klisart hardware store. He caused damage of at least $100 with a single shot.

The Bee editorializes: "After the shooting, a general (uproar)...lasted till near midnight, and (with) the marshal's excellent vigilance, i.e. 'to keep away from the rowdies', the whole bunch managed to escape."

Later we find that H. T. Klisart has filed suit against Joe Green of West Union, and was awarded damages totaling $99 and costs.

The Moe Mercantile Company was organized in October with a capital of $15,000. This firm's officers were: A. C. Saboe, president; John Moe, sec'y and treas.; Peter Wolfs, Ole Hauge and N. Moe—directors. They have purchased the Figge Company and will continue the general merchandise business with John Moe as mgr.

Oliver Qualley, a 17 year old lad, lost his life when his rig was struck by a Milwaukee train at the Lydia street crossing. His companions in the buggy, the two young sons of A. E. Quien, escaped serious injury. They were thrown clear, but Qualley was struck squarely and instantly killed. The Milwaukee Road paid damages of $1000 to Mr. and Mrs. Martin Qualley for the untimely death of their son.

BLAST IN DENTAL OFFICE

A near fatal explosion, in Dr. Bammert's office over the Ossian bank, resulted in the dentist being splattered with burning gasoline. His presence of mind, combined with Attorney Allen's prompt rescue efforts, smothered his flaming clothing and likely saved his life. But he suffered severe burns, and is now convalescing at his home in Lansing. The quick response by our fire department saved the building--perhaps the entire block, from Kenefick's store to F. A. Figge's home.

The Bee observed: "Ward Allen is deserving of a Carnegie medal; but for him, Dr. Bammert would undoubtably have perished. His timely arrival and quick action makes him the hero of this conflagration."
