The newly completed city hall was accepted as meeting contract specifications. An insurance contract for $2500 was awarded to John Boyle. An order for a new fire bell was let to Frank Figge & Son at a cost of $50. The specifications call for a weight of 800 pounds and keying to the regulation fire note. A code of alarms was established: two taps on the bell for council sessions; three for meetings of the fire department; and a continuous ringing for fire alarms. The new town hall was described by editor Daly as a "splendid edifice".

THE SILVER SPRINGS CREAMERY COMPANY

The farmers of this area formed a creamery company and have purchased the Scheidelmantel brothers' plant. The new business will assume the name of the Scheidel company—Silver Springs Creamery Company. This new corporation, formed on Feb. 14, I898, had a capital of $1250. It was raised by selling shares at ten dollars each. The following men are listed as the first directors; M. J. Nicholson, Theo. Scheidel, H. P. Nicholson, Ole O. Riveland, Anton Kleve, A. P. Cornell and A. F. Gerleman.

This creamery was located two miles west of Ossian on the Scheidelmantel farm. In 1905, when the Boe & Nelson creamery was purchased by the corporation, it was moved to a site south of town (present county park). It became the principal butter plant in Military township and was to endure for many years. Theodore Scheidel was the first manager. He advised that the firm is paying 15¢ an inch for cream at the present time—a price unequaled by any other creamery in Winneshiek county.
