A German mutual fire insurance company was organized and incorporated by Wm. Hemesath, H. Funke, John Hemesath and Anton Bohr.

The Commercial Hotel returned to operation with a new owner, T. S. Hall. We believe this brick building, the William's egg house, to be the oldest structure in town. Old accounts record that it was built for A. F. Cartner by the Alsip brothers in the year, 1869. While Mr. Gaertner is listed as a saloon-keeper in the census of 1870, we suspect he also kept boarders, thus qualifying as an early hotel-keeper. Mr. Hall purchased this "Green Hotel" from Rufus Ferris this year.

An elegant 118 piece table setting was on display in the window of Anderson & Gunderson's store. It carried a price tag of $9.50.

The election of 1897 resulted in another Republican sweep of Winneshiek county, but the Democrats elected a state senator and again held a substantial edge in Military township.

A supper was held at Dr. Jewell's residence to raise funds for a new cemetery fence. Receipts were recorded as $22.35. A woven wire fence was erected along the cemetery on the road south of town.

The Blanchaine drug store advertised a sure way to prevent a cold: "After exposure, take a dose of Foley's honey and tar. Never Fails!"

1898

High school principal Prof. Dobbyn was arrested and jailed. He was charged with lewdness by C. J. Mills. He appeared before Justice W. W.
