John McManus was elected as the first teacher with his salary set at $25 per month, summer, and $30 a month in winter. Other early teachers were; Mary Gurnesy, Cara Jones, Ellen Collins, Lydia Collins and Loretto McGary. Area teachers who attended an institute in Decorah this year were: David Banning, M. E. Scheidelmantel, Nancy Banning, Lucy Daniels, Elsie Wilkins, Eva Stout, Mary Stout, Jennie Daniels, Sarah Owens, Carrie Sawyer, Mattie Harvey and Eber DeCow. Much new construction was reported in the Ossian area during the spring of this year. Walter Rathbun is raising a barn 40 X 60'; J. A. Hart a barn 40 X 47'; Andrew Meyer a barn 36 X 56'; and Andrew Baker has a new town dwelling underway. Frank Bort is erecting a drug store next to Baker Bros, mercantile. Mr. Peyer is contemplating a new brick building for a saloon. Judge DeCow proposes a "mansion" for his hogs, while Peter Rosa talks of a nice new home as does Wm. Oxley on his farm north of Castalia. The Military officials elected this year were: 0. T. Lommen, C. Kuneke and F. J. Padden—trustees; H. Daniels—justice; J. Malloy—clerk and collector; and 0. T. Lommen—assessor. The town rallied to assist Kossuth county residents, who were ravaged by an invasion of grasshoppers. R. N. Sawyer served as chairman of a soliciting committee, consisting of P. H. Mills, G. L. Faust, W. J. Cremer, Hosea Bullard, Andrew Meyers, H. A. Baker, L. Bergan, James Malloy and F. M. Rowley. M. J. Carter advertised his services as a farm auctioneer. He lists his fee at $5 per sale. The markets as listed by P. H. Mills were: wheat—90¢ to $1; corn—40¢ to 50¢; Oats—35¢; barley—50¢ to 75¢; butter—15¢; eggs—10¢ and dressed hogs—$7.40. A DIRECTORY OF MILITARY TOWNSHIP FOR 1875
