The first Hook, according to records in
Washington, D. C., was a John Hook who was listed on
the Pilgrim Company Passenger List. One of his
descendants, James Addison Hook, was the great
grandfather of the present generation of Hooks,
migrated to Mercer County, Missouri from
Bellefontaine, Ohio, in 1855. He became
a farmer in this area.
In 1858, due to the general unrest of the
times, preceding the Civil War, he and his wife,
Mary Ellis, his one daughter and four sons moved to
Benton Township, here in Wayne County, Iowa. He died in
1874. His
widow lived until 1890.
Two of his sons, Jerry and Lewis served in
the Union Army during the Civil War. The
younger sons were James and Robert. Robert
Hook was the grandfather of the present Hooks. He was a
blacksmith, having learned his trade in Ohio. Robert was
born in 1836 and died in 1910. Robert and
his wife Harriet Keith, were the parent of eight
boys and three girls, all of whom are deceased.
Three of Robert’s children and parents of the
present Hooks in Wayne County are: Hiram
Hook, born in 1876, married Minnie Elzina Wray, and
died in 1961. They
had four sons and three daughters. His living
children are Mrs. Ray Monteith, Mrs. Ruby Couchman,
Mrs. Tommie Silcott, Wayne County Sheriff Jesse K.
Hook, J. C. Hook and James Hook.
Everett Hook born 1883, married Myrtle Smith
and died 1958.
He had one son, Floyd Hook of Corydon, Iowa.
Lewis Hook, born in 1862, married Sally Engle
and died in 1920.
He had six sons and two daughters. His living
children are Bernice Kellow of Corydon, Iowa. Glenn Hook
of Cresco, Elzina Richardson of Bloomfield, Dewey
Hook of Centerville, Iowa.
