J. HILLYARD FAMILY
William J. and Elizabeth Hill Hillyard were
one of the pioneer families to Wayne County. Elizabeth
walked the open prairie to a school near the present
New Zion Church.
William’s favorite story was the James Gang
robbing the Corydon Bank. William,
son of George and Rebecca Drennan Hillyard, was born
in Sangamon County, Ill., Dec. 22, 1854. He moved
to Wayne County as a child. Elizabeth
Hill, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Braden Hill was
born in Edgar County, Ill., May 26, 1860. They were
married June 29, 1876 in the Methodist Episcopal
Church at Allerton.
Their golden wedding anniversary was observed
June 29. 1926.
Six sons were born to this union. Only two
grew to manhood.
Merton A. was a telegraph operator for the
CRI&P Railroad at Allerton. His
children: Raymond,
Braden and Marjorie.
Only Raymond is living and resides in
Milwaukee, Wis.
Hervey H. Hillyard, known as “H”, lived his
entire life at Allerton as a farmer, and agent and
adjuster for the Wayne County Mutual Insurance
Company for 38 years.
He married Alma B. Feigh December 1, 1915. They, too,
celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Their
daughters: Zelda
Crow, Mendota, Ill. And Eloise Hoyt, Lodi, Calif. Grand-daughters: Janet
Hoyt, Rawlings, Calif., Marcia Hoyt, Majoros,
Maryland, Vicki Crow Vogel, Ill. And Kristie Crow,
Ill. Alma
moved to Mendota, Ill. In 1969. |
