IN MEMORY OF CORA FINCH

Miss Cora Finch, having taught in the state of Iowa elementary schools for 58 years, retired at the end of semester in 1963.  To begin her teaching career, she was inspired by a first-grade teacher who lived for a time in the Finch home.

Miss Finch graduated from the Allerton High School in 1905, and immediately began as a teacher in Jefferson Center rural school, where she remained for the following eight years.  She then transferred to the primary grades in Clio for six years, then on to Greenville and Rossie for 20 years before returning to Wayne County in 1938 to teach in Allerton until her retirement.

Through the years Miss Finch spent much time in summer sessions at Iowa State University in Ames, the former Des Moines University in Des Moines and the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, ending with completion of the primary education course at Drake University in Des Moines, much of this work having been done through correspondence.

All her 58 year career was in primary and kindergarten work.

Her name was placed in the “Book of Memories” at Salisbury House, and she was honored by her selection as a life member of the Iowa State Education Association.  At her retirement Open House, many families with three generations were present, all three generations having been taught by Miss Finch.  She has said many times, “If you can teach youngsters to become good citizens, I feel the teacher has done a good job.  They must learn to live with each other, for how can nations agree if individuals can not?”

Miss Finch was born in Wayne County, Iowa the daughter of David G. and Clara Rinkler Finch, August 31, 1886, and passed away in Clinton, Iowa, February 28, 1969.

Submitted by her niece, Mrs. Wilma Finch Herbert of Kansas, City, Missouri.
