JOHN FERREL FAMILY

 

     John Ferrel, born July 4, 1822, came from Ohio to Wayne County in 1855 after marrying Rebecca Rees in 1850.  In 1856 he and his family settled on a farm 1 ¼ miles north of where Allerton now stands.   The Jesse James gang stopped there for a drink as they were going to Missouri after robbing the Corydon bank.  His first wife died in 1874 after which he married Rebecca Hamilton.  He and his first wife as 12 children of which 9 lived to be adults in the old home which still stands, now owned by the Marvin Cantwells.  He died in 1888 leaving 80 acres to each of the children.  Three of the boys, Elijah, Jerry and Joseph sold theirs and homesteaded in western Nebraska.  The old homestead went to Jack who owned it all his life.  The rest of the boys built on their land, married and raised their families.

     Elijah (Lige) – (1851-1940) held build some of the first buildings in Allerton.  Married Elizabeth Nelson.  They had 5 children, Lulu, Harry, Clause, Ollie, Inez.

     Henry (1853-1904) married Kate Harden.  They had 4 children, Otis, Clarence, Vesta, Ernest.

     John (1858-1930) married Elzora Grismore.  They had 4 children, Orval, Earl, Frata, Thelma.

     Jeremiah (Jerry) – (1861-1932) married Julia Moulton.  They had 6 children, Ruth, Cora, Lyle, Ina, Zelma, Gladys.

     Joseph (Joe) – (1865-1953) married May Smith.  They had 3 children, Edith, Karl, Leo.

     Jackson (Jack) – (1867-1954) married Eva Carmichal.  They had 2 children, Harley, and Alva.  Jack later married Anna Kimple and had 2 children, Vera and Emmert.

     Harvey (Harve) – (1869-1909) married Belle Stiles.  They had 2 children, Hazel and Arlo.  Harve married Lulu Kimple and had one child, Wilma.

     Elizabeth Ann (Lizzie) – (1871-1938) married Wm. Keller.  They had 4 children, Lester, Edna, Don, Marg, who married James Stiles.

     Mary (1873-1942) married Fred Smith.  They had 2 children, Gerald, and Merle, who married Jay Tooley.

     Six of the children of John and Rebecca Ferrel are buried along with their wives and their father and mother in the Allerton Cemetery.

     All the descendants of these children that are living in Wayne County today are:  Alva Ferrel, son of Jack and Eva,and his wife Phoebe.  He had 2 children living in Des Moines.  He spent 2 ½ years in the army, in World War II.  Now retired from Rock Island Railroad, having worked 47 years for them.

     Nona (Wells), widow of Leo Ferrel, son of Joe and May Ferrel, lives in Allerton.  Her daughter, Anita and husband, live in Corydon.  Her son Joel, lives in Tullahoma, Tennessee and is in the Air Force.

     Edith Ferrel Snodgrass, widow of Everrett Snodgrass, lives in Allerton, and their son, Harold and Leona (Woods) Snodgrass live on a farm near Allerton.  They have 4 children and 12 grandchildren.  Two boys, Wayne and Joe live with their families in Des Moines.  Frances and her husband Guy Hampton, have 4 children and live near Leon, Iowa.  Carolyn and husband Jim Allpress and 2 daughters, Darci and Tina, live in Seymour, Iowa.

     Edith’s daughter, Helen and husband, G. F. Miller, live in Oskaloosa, Iowa.  She works in the office of the Iowa Highway Commission.  Her daughter Doris and husband Lee Teed have 2 daughters, Nickie and Penny, and live in Des Moines.  Her other daughter Betty and husband Duane Holt have 3 children, Brenda, Russell and Brian, and live northeast of Corydon on a farm.  Her son, Dan and wife live in Iowa City and he will receive his PH.D. in Sociology this spring.
