Allerton, Iowa Centennial, DYER
FAMILY
Clyde Charles Dyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E.
Dyer and Dorothy Lucille Mason, daughter of Mr. Ivan
Mason and the late Icil Mason, all of Corydon,
became Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Charles Dyer on February
22, 1946, beginning the family.
March 1, 1946, they began working for Artie
and Lois Partridge (Also that day a brother and two
sisters welcomed a baby to the Partridge family). Clyde and
Dorothy lived ¾ mile south of the Mt. Vernon country
school. For
two years they worked for this family.
Clyde gave Dorothy a registered Guernsey milk
cow. It
was received on her first birthday after marriage. The cow
was purchased from the Harry Miskimins herd. From that
day on Clyde and Dorothy have had milk cows.
One year they farmed for themselves west of
highway 65 on the Pearl McCullough farm. The next
year they were in partnership with Pearl. In the
same year, on February 8, 1950 a baby boy named
Clair Charles Dyer was born in the Yocom Hospital in
Chariton, Iowa, beginning Clyde and Dorothy Dyers’
family.
The year 1951, they purchased a 160 acre farm
six miles south of Allerton. Peggy
Elaine was born on February 12, 1953 in the Decatur
County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. The same
day a boy cousin was born to the Harold Masons.
Clair started to Allerton School in 1955 and
Peggy in 1958.
We were building a full basement under the
house and lacked four layers of blocks having it
completed in 1959 when a wind storm twisted and
pulled the house apart. Many
friends and relatives helped the family move to the
120 acre Murphy farm just ¼ mile south, which had
been purchased the same year. Remodeling
had to be done to the house while the family lived
in it. It
is the present home of Clyde and Dorothy.
Clair started to have difficulty with his
legs, finding out it was a disease of the bone and
was off and on crutches for four years. He had to
be carried up and down the stairs at school. 4-H was
something we enjoyed doing although Clair was on
crutches some of the time. We
belonged to the Warren Warriors and Peggy belonged
to the Warren Lucky Stars too. Guernseys
were their project every year. Peggy has
Home Furnishing, Clothing and Food in girls 4-H. Clair went
to Waterloo and the Iowa State Fair and received
high awards. Peggy
also went to State Fair.
The Dyer farm expanded by 120 acres when they
purchased the farm connecting west of the home
place.
Clair graduated from the Wayne Community
School District in 1968. Following
graduation he remained at home helping his father
with the farming.
Later, Clair bought a farm, one day known as
Warsaw, from Dale Shriver. It
consists of 120 acres which had to have clearing
done on it.
Peggy graduated from Wayne Community in 1971. She
married Kenneth Edward Hamilton, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Darrell Hamilton of Davis City on June 20, 1971. They are
buying a farm in the Davis City – Pleasonton area. Kenneth is
also an employee of E. W. Kneip, Inc. of Lamoni.
A Grade A dairy farm and a 20 by 80
Harveststore was constructed for the dairy. The
purchase of 115 acres from Grant Lovett was the next
improvement.
Clair married Debbie Pfeiffer, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Jr. Pfeiffer of Mercer, on April 29,
1973. They
live on the farm that has the milking setup. There are
between 60 and 70 cows milked daily. |
