DUDEN FAMILY
William H. Duden, M.D., was an early Wayne
County physician.
He was born March 13, 1830, in Huntingdon
County Pennsylvania, to David and Ann Duden. He moved
with his parents to Ohio in 1834.
In 1852 he married Mary L. Bigelow of Galena,
Ohio. She
was the daughter of Dr. Alpheus and Ursula Case
Bigelow.
William and Mary Duden moved to Monroe
County, Iowa in 1854 and resettled in Wayne County
in 1857. They
established themselves on a farm in Clinton Township
where they lived until 1885 when they moved to
Allerton.
William H. Duden was a member of Company “B”,
Third Battalion, Iowa Southern Border Brigade along
with many other Wayne Countians during the Civil
War.
Dr. and Mary Duden raised eight children to
adulthood, Flora, Lenora, George E., Dulana, Althea,
Alpheus B., Charles W. and Estus G.
Mary L. Duden passed aware in Sept. 1894 and
Dr. Duden in Aug. 1919.
Estus G. Duden was born in Allerton, Nov. 8,
1868. He
married Joanna Vance of Ironton, Missouri. She was
born in 1870.
Estus and Joanna Duden farmed in Warren
Township. Their
children were Mamie, William, Walter, Belle, Janie,
Edward and Nellie.
Upon retirement Estus and Joanna moved to
Allerton. He
passed away in 1951 and she in 1963.
Edward Duden was born near Allerton, March 8,
1907. He
graduated from Allerton High School in 1926. In 1929 he
married Margaret Thomas of Humeston. The Dudens
have spent their entire married life in Warren
Township, farming until 1939. From 1939
until 1944, Edward was an agent at the Standard Oil
Company. They
purchased the Brooks Feed Store and operated a feed
and propane business for a quarter of a century,
until 1969. The
Dudens still reside on their farm. They have
three children, Teressa Wampler of Allerton, Dr.
Thomas Duden of Kirksville, Missouri, and Katheleen
McQueen of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, and nine
grandchildren, Mark, David and Rebecca Wampler,
Denise and Deborah Duden, and Susan, Michael, and
Serice McQueen.
