Hugh Conklin (1831-1916), the orphaned son of
Hugh Conklin, was born in Orange Co. Indiana and
came to Wayne County in June 1857. In 1866
Hugh Conklin purchased a tract of native prairie in
Warren Township.
Hugh built his home which is still standing
today on this tract.
It contained a curved staircase and wide,
glass paned windows.
The materials were hauled by mule team from
as far away as Missouri, Chariton, and Keokuk. It was
furnished with an ingrained carpet, Nottingham lace
curtains, a what-not bureau, cane-seated chairs, and
even an organ – most of which were hauled from
Ottumwa. On
May 27, 1862 he married Elizabeth Weagley

daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Crunkliton) Weagley.

(1865-1958), Helen (1867-1875), Sarah (Huston)
(1873-1946), and Claude H. (1878-1950).

son of Edgar L. Conklin, Sarah and Charles C.
Huston; Hazel H. (Shelton), Hugh C., Percy Kenneth,
Fred M., Noel C. and James C. Blanche and Fred
