Allerton, Iowa Centennial, THE CHASE
FAMILY
In the spring of 1901, Miner Chase of
Marshalltown, Iowa, bought the furniture and
undertaking business at Allerton from Isaac Shriver. On July
24, he, his wife Iva B. and three daughters, Mabel,
Maude and Irene, who were of school age, moved to
Allerton and he took over the business.
In a few months he passed the “Iowa State
Board of Embalming” examination and became the first
licensed mortician in Allerton. Soon the
entire interior of the store was remodeled and
enlarged, giving him much more display room. A modern
Chapel was also added.
In 1907 the Chase’s became the proud parents
of their only son, Kermit. The
children all attended the Allerton School and were
graduated, Mabel in 1906, Maude in 1908, Irene in
1913, and Kermit in 1924.
Mr. Chase was the owner and operator of the
Chase Furniture and Funeral business from 1901 to
1946 when he sold the business to Mr. and Mrs.
Warren Randolph.
During the last few years Mr. Chase was in
business he was assisted by his son-in-law, Rev. L.
A. Johnson, who held two Embalmer’s licenses, Iowa
and Missouri.
Mr. and Mrs. Chase both passed away in
November 1947 as a result of a fire in their home. The four
children now reside at the following addresses: Mrs. Mabel
C. Johnson, Corydon, Iowa; Mrs. Maude Renfort,
Miami, Florida; Mrs. Irene Kelbany, Miami, Florida
and Kermit M. Chase, Hemet, California. |
